New Delhi, 29 November, ( Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has sanctioned Rs 500 crore for taking up immediate relief works in flood-affected areas of Tamil Nadu, which are slowly limping back to normal.

Torrential rains have left a trail of destruction in as many as 15 districts of the state; rain has abated but many villages are water logged in Tiruchirapalli belt.

Stagnant water was being pumped out from low-lying areas and the residents of the affected areas, who had vacated their houses due to flooding, have started returning home.

Roads in many areas have turned slushy and slippery, are therefore not fit for smooth traffic flow. National Highway connecting Trichy and Chennai is still cut off.

Train services have been restored from Chennai to Trichy and Madurai.
