FORUM-ASIA condemns the attack on the National Human Rights Commission Office in Sri Lanka

Bangkok, 20 October, (Asiantribune.com): “It is not sufficient to create a National Human Rights Commission. State authorities should ensure a conducive and safe environment to enable the Commission to carry on their legitimate responsibilities,” pointed out Anselmo Lee, the Executive Director of FORUM-ASIA.

In statement released to the press, Anselmo Lee, the Executive Director of FORUM-ASIA while condemning the recent attack on the National Human Rights Office in Colombo underlined that “If State authorities cannot even guarantee the security and a conducive environment for the NHRC, the ‘Defender of the Defenders’, to perform its duties, the security of other Human Rights Defenders - groups and individuals who work for the protection and promotion of human rights in the country is at serious risk.”

Forum Asia, an Asian Forum for Human Rights and Development based in Bangkok, Thailand emphasized that it along with its member organizations in Sri Lanka, INFORM, Law and Society Trust (LST) and Community Trust Fund (CTF) strongly condemn the break-in of the head office of the National Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (NHRC) and call on the Sri Lankan authorities to conduct a speedy and transparent investigation into this cowardly act.
