[b]Colombo, 21 December, (Asiantribune.com): [/b]To eradicate poverty and hunger people should be provided employment that are intellectually satisfying and economically rewarding and the much used economic term "Gross National Product (GNP)" should be changed to "Gross National Happiness" (GNH), said Professor M S Swaminathan, UNESCO-Cousteau Professor in Eco-technology for Asian and Chairman, M S Swaminathan Foundation.

Professor Swaminathan, who is widely considered as the 'Father of the Green Revolution of India' was speaking at the 61st Annual Sessions of the Sri Lanka Association for the Advancement of Science (SLAAS) held at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall.

He said that those countries with free or independent could assist to eradicate hunger and reduce poverty by dissemination of information and educating the public.

He said in poor nation’s poverty and hunger have been haunting and the scientists have been relentlessly working to remove this great problem with their best contributions. More jobs have to be created in the rural Sri Lanka and those jobs have to be intellectually satisfying and economically rewarding and the same situation exists in India. He reiterated the contentions of Prof Tuley De Silva, General President, SLAAS, about the development of bio-products and said that bio-product development and creating bio-parks would be one of the major areas that could offer solutions in creating more jobs for the rural population.
