By M Rama Rao - Reporting for Asian Tribune from New Delhi

New Delhi, 10 February (Asiantribune.com): Strongly deploring the raging cartoon controversy over depictions of the Prophet Muhammad, three global egg-heads on human rights have made a fervent appeal to all parties concerned to avoid fuelling hatred. "Try to bring together all in a spirit of dialogue", Doudou Diene, Asma Jahangir, and Ambeyi Ligabo in a statement.

The three are associated with the Geneva based UN Commission for Human Rights as Special Rapporteurs in their personal capacity.

While Doudou Diene deals with contemporary forms of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and intolerance, Asma is handles issues related to freedom of religion and belief. Ambeyi specializes in the promotion and protection of the right to freedom of opinion and expression.

Their statement voiced equal concern about the reactions that followed the publications, and strongly condemned "death threats against journalists and intimidation of the media as well as the loss of lives, threats and other forms of violence that have occurred over the past few days, often directed at people with no responsibility for, or control over, the publications."
