Colombo, 25 May, (Asiantribune.com): Government of Japan yesterday provided a sum of US $ 78,711 (approximately Rs. 8.2 million) towards the "Project for Rehabilitation & Improvement of Rural Infrastructure Facilities for the Benefit of the Disadvantaged Rural Poor in Remote & Vulnerable Areas of Moneragala District".

The Project is to be implemented by the Samastha Lanka Praja Sanwardana Manadalaya (SLPSM), an NGO engaged in facilitating self-help oriented development to the poor and disadvantaged communities in remote areas of Sri Lanka.

The grant will be utilized for the rehabilitation and improvement of eight rural roads in Badalkumbura, Buttala, Wellawaya and Thanamalwila DS divisions, with the objective of enhancing the accessibility of the people, to provide more marketing opportunities for their agricultural products and towards improving the livelihoods of the people as a whole.

The construction of the roads will be carried out with active participation of the rural communities in these areas, where over 162,000 persons will be benefited. This is the second occasion that the Government of Japan has funded SLPSM to improve rural development activities. On the first occasion grant funds were provided for the construction of 14 pre-schools, improvement of sanitary facilities and provision of drinking water wells in Hambantota, Kalutara and Moneragala Districts.

Ambassador of Japan Akio Suda giving the significance of rural development in Sri Lanka said: “Assistance for the revitalization of rural community is important in terms of poverty alleviation and bridging the gap between the rural and the urban areas. Moneragala is classified as one of the least developed district in Sri Lanka.

Therefore, support for basic human needs including safe drinking water, food, and basic infrastructure such as, roads and bridges are essential to improve the livelihood of these people. Japan is extending assistance in view of supporting the efforts of the government, communities: and the people of Sri Lanka towards the poverty alleviation and rural development.
”
The Government of Japan gives priority in its assistance for projects that promotes poverty reduction and enhances rural development. These projects are expected to improve living standards of the rural community, and to promote overall development in the district.

SLPSM Chairman M.G.S. Silva said that this grant would be considered as a great help for rural development in Monaragala District. “We are happy that Japanese government extended this assistance as a result of our successful collection of previous projects,” he said.
