Prof. Ratnajeevan H. Hoole on dealing with a terrorist suspect

Prof. Ratnajeevan H. Hoole writes that he was dealing with a terrorist suspect backed by low class thugs and exam cheats at the on-line news websites run by a few Tamil Diaspora, who used to go under multiple names. He adds that he observed that the person concerned has published articles under one particular name. Once he used that particular name, he presumed that was indeed his name and searched under that name for that person’s writing. Suddenly the person concerned wrote back that he is in another name similar to the Americanized first name middle initial last name style, reveals Prof. HooleProf. Ratnajeevan H. In statement released to "Asian Tribune," Prof.Hoole who is the Vice Chancellor, University of Jaffna (on special leave) wrote “I equally recognized that I was dealing with a terrorist suspect who seemed to have a way of knowing when attempts would be made on people’s lives as in Gothabaya Rajapakse’s case.

He pointed out "In searching Sangam to see if my article is there as he had informed me, I saw a peace by Sachi Srikantha again using double meaning to threaten people with death – the title of his article was "A Hole in the Head of Ms. Nirupama Subramanian." Nirupama Subramanian was The Hindu’s Sri Lanka correspondent. It reminded me of the reason behind the dreaded name "Pottu Amman" – who is said to put pottu-like holes in people’s foreheads.

Given below is the full text of the statement released by Professor Ratnajeevan H.Hoole to "Asian Tribune":

I received an email from one Sachi Sri Kantha on 18 December 2006 referring to my letter to Sangam.Org that ( "Asian Tribune," published on 17 December 2006. His email had unnecessary sarcasm on Christians and gave a list of publications by him. It accused me of applying erroneous methods in data base search. He listed 76 items under the title “Research Papers, Reviews and Book Chapters.” He stated “Hope you can count from 1 to 100 and above.” He had even boasted of his articles in the prestigious journals Nature and Lancet. He informed me that my letter had appeared in sangam.org and tamilnation.org.

However, to date I have not seen my letter published either in Sangam.org or in the Tamil nation.org. Only it was published in the "Asian Tribune."

But there has been a reply without even publishing my letter and apparently, an it amounted to the exhibition of the standards of overseas Tamil nationalists as they broadcast their lowly writings with filth and their lowly vilification campaigns in the web-sites of organizations purporting to represent high Tamil culture.

There was even a denial that I was editor for the Sangam. I would take that denial seriously only if Dr. Shan Nagendra, former President of the Sangam, would personally come forward to deny that I edited a newsletter for the Sangam at his request with his brother Selvendra printing it out of my house basement in Plainsboro, NJ. When the service of truth is so poor in the annals of the Sangam, a debate seemed puerile and indeed, if I entered a debate at their low level, I would soon find myself sinking to their level of language usage. God forbid!

I recognized that I was dealing with a terrorist suspect backed by low class thugs and exam cheats at the Sangam and Tamil Nation, a terrorist suspect who was going under multiple names. Indeed he has published articles under the name "Sachi Srikantha." Once he used that name, I presumed that it was indeed his name and searched under that name. And now suddenly he is informing me that he is Sachi Sri Kantha in the Americanized first name middle initial last name style. I have seen longer versions of Sachi as well.

I equally recognized that I was dealing with a terrorist suspect who seemed to have a way of knowing when attempts would be made on people’s lives as in Gothabaya Rajapakse’s case. In searching Sangam to see if my article is there as he had informed me, I saw a peace by Sachi Srikantha again using double meaning to threaten people with death – the title of his article was “A Hole in the Head of Ms. Nirupama Subramanian.” Nirupama Subramanian was the then The Hindu’s Sri Lanka correspondent. It reminded me of the reason behind the dreaded name "Pottu Amman" – who is said to put pottu-like holes in people’s foreheads.

I therefore decided that silence is best in these circumstances.

This was until this morning when I received another email from whatever-his-real-name-is, seemingly demanding a correction from me for saying he does not have publications. Being so importuned, let me say at least to get him off my back for a while:

1. I am not responsible when an author goes under multiple names. One assumes when he uses one name that that is his name.

2. Whatever-his-name-is, is an academic hoax despite his list of papers. The claim on Tamil Nation is way beyond his real achievements. The assertion in Tamilnation.Org is, to quote verbatim, “Since 1981, Sri Kantha also has published over 100 research papers in 40 biomedical journals.” I emphasize his use of the words journal and research paper (see http://www.tamilnation.org/forum/sachisrikantha/index.htm) which means only one thing in science – a peer reviewed scholarly article breaking new ground in a sequentially and regularly published journal. It does not mean letters or book reviews. But the list of 76 “Research Papers, Reviews and Book Chapters” he sent me, even without knocking off the reviews and book chapters, does not amount to “over 100” as boasted by him. If only biochemistry journals and proper research articles are counted, discounting his limericks on sex and obscure journals, the number will fall far, far short of 100. The boast shamelessly remains on Tamilnation.Org despite its now being amply evident that it was a lot of hot air; an outright lie.

3. His biggest hoax is the sixty-fifth piece he has listed under the header “Research Papers, Reviews and Book Chapters” in the list of publications he has sent me: Sri Kantha S. Portuguese role in spread of HTLV-1 virus. Nature, June 19, 1986; 321: 733.” I was impressed that this man from Jaffna had got an article into Nature. I immediately wanted to read it with a certain measure of pride. But alas! It is listed by Nature under correspondence despite the sturdy claims of its author (seehttp://www.nature.com/nature/journal/v321/n6072/abs/321733a0.html. Considering that he has another list of his writings titled “Letters, Comment and Debate,” where he has listed other letters of his to Nature (at least one under the name Srikantha and not Sri Kantha! – see http://www.nature.com/nature/journal/v323/n6083/abs/323010c0.html) and then lists a letter to Nature as an article in Nature, one discerns a deliberate attempt to show that correspondence as a full article by him. He has no journal article in the list he sent me in Lancet or Nature. He is a professional letter writer!

What is sad is that without these boasts, without these subtle fixing of his list of publications, without listing a letter as a journal article, without these claims to have published journal articles in Nature and Lancet, I would have revised my opinion of his work in the field of science and called him a good scientist, even though in his field most serious scientists have far more numerous publications over the period of 25 years or so that he has spent in it. But now, he is simply what he has made himself to be – a vain charlatan – indeed a plagiarist who translates a book and then lists himself as though he were the author of that book (see the first of “his” books he has listed in his email to me).

S. Ratnajeevan H. Hoole

Post Script: So that I am not accused of the same tactics of TamilNation.Org and Sangam.Org – namely replying to letter they do not first publish prior to opening it up to discussion – I am giving a copy of whatever-his-name-is emailed me.
