Buddhist Monk killed by suspected LTTE assassins

Colombo, 14 May, (Asiantribune.com): A Buddhist monk living in 'Sri Pabbattharamaya' Buddhist temple at Mahadivulwewa-Stage 1, Morawewa has been shot and killed by motorbike riding unidentified gunmen.Ven. Hadungamuwe Nandarathene Thero, chief priest of 'Sri Pabbattharamaya' Buddhist temple was the monk who was shot and killed yesterday around 9.15 in the morning within the temple premises. Ven. According to Defense website, "Eyewitnesses in the area said that three LTTE gunmen who came on two motor cycles had shot dead the Monk and added that the motive of the killing was not known."

In the meantime, according to pro-LTTE TamilNet assassins came in a motor bicycle to the Buddhist Vihare and called the chief priest out and fired at him. The attackers immediately fled the scene after the shooting, sources further said.

Mahadiulwewa is located along Trincomalee-Anuradhapura road, about 34 km north of Trincomalee town.

The Morawewa Police are conducting investigations.
