Australia provides scholarships for the Asia Pacific Region

Sunil C. Perera - Reporting from Colombo

Colombo, 19 May, (Asiantribune.com): The Australian High Commissioner, Dr Greg French, on Friday announced the opening of the Australian Government’s scholarship program for 2007.

Australian Scholarships is a $1.4 billion Australian Government initiative to provide over 19,000 scholarships in the Asia Pacific region over the period 2006 – 2010.

“The Australian Scholarships initiative demonstrates the high value that Australia places on building relationships with Sri Lanka and other countries in the region, based on mutual understanding, respect and people-to-people linkages informed by education” the High Commission stated.

“Australian Scholarships will bring together under one banner three major Australian scholarship programs: Australian Leadership Award (ALA), Australian Development Scholarships (ADS), and the Endeavour Program”.

“These programs, managed by Australia’s Overseas Aid Agency, AusAID, and Australia’s Department of Education, Science and Training reflect a whole-of-government commitment by Australia to education and training cooperation in Sri Lanka, as well as the region”.

Australian Leadership Awards (ALA) focus on developing current and future leaders in business, education and government within the Asia-Pacific region, and providing support for post-graduate study in Australia.

Australian Development Scholarships (ADS) provide opportunities for Sri Lankan government employees to undertake undergraduate or postgraduate study in Australia. The Endeavour Program comprises a mix of postgraduate, undergraduate, vocational and technical education courses, and research and professional development awards.
