New Delhi, 07 November, ( Indian Government on Sunday night set up a one-man fact finding probe into the allegations leveled by Volcker report against foreign minister Natwar Singh and the Congress party.

Virendra Dayal, a seasoned diplomt and former UN Undersecretary General, comprises the one man mission. Announcing the decision after a series of high level discussions, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh held throughout the day, his media advisor Sanjay Baru said Dayal will have three months initially to give his findings.

Dayal will be special envoy with the full authority and backing of the Government to liaise with the United Nations and will liaise with the UN to collect all relevant information about the involvement of Indian entities and individuals in Iraqi oil for food pay off scam.

Baru said the appointment is a follow-up on Prime Minister's initial reaction to the Volcker report that the government would like to get to the truth. The government will announce some more measures, he said but did not elaborate.

The BJP has criticised the Dayal appointment as an attempt at cover up but the Congress allies like the DMK, and RJD as also the Left parties have welcomed the decision.
