Indian President, PM greet Rajapakse

From M Rama Rao - Reporting for Asian Tribune from New Delhi

New Delhi, 21 November (Asiantribune.com): India has congratulated the new Sri Lanka's president Rajapakse and wished him success. Both President A P J Abdul Kalam and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in their separate messages hoped that India-Sri Lanka ties would be strengthened further in the days ahead.

Manmohan Singh, who has already sent a formal message of good wishes, telephoned Rajapakse on Sunday to personally congratulate the Sri Lankan head of state.

Noting that his election victory came on the day of his birthday, Indian Prime Minister described it as doubly auspicious and said that he looked forward to welcoming him to India at an early date.

"He (Prime Minister) said that he looked forward to working together with President Rajapakse in further strengthening bilateral relations and also looked forward to welcoming him to India at an early date", Navtej Sarna, external affairs ministry spokesman, told reporters.
