By M Rama Rao - Reporting for Asian Tribune from New Delhi

New Delhi, 16 February (Asiantribune.com): Ignoring appeals from human rights campaigners, India has decided to go ahead with the planned visit of President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam to Myanmar.

"The President shall pay a State visit to Myanmar from March 8-10, 2006 at the invitation of the Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of Myanmar, Senior General Than Shwe", Indian Foreign Office announced here today. Only last week human rights activist from home and abroad made a fervent appeal to President Kalam to keep his visit in abeyance to send a signal of concern to Yangon for the continued incarceration of Aung San Suu Kyi.

This will be the first visit by an Indian President to Myanmar. Coming close on the heels of Chairman Than Shwe's State visit to India in October 2004, the visit is the culmination of the upswing in bilateral relations in recent years, the foreign office said.
