India's President APJ Abdul Kalam on a visit to Myanmar

India's President APJ Abdul Kalam on a visit to Myanmar

By M Rama Rao - Reporting from New Delhi

New Delhi, 09 March (Asiantribune.com): India President APJ Abdul Kalam began a three day visit to Myanmar ignoring protests from rights groups. As his special aircraft landed yesterday at the Yangon International Airport, junta's strongman Senior General Than Shwe warmly greeted him and welcomed him to building strong ties particularly in the energy sector.

Foreign Secretary Shyam Saran is accompanying Kalam on this first ever visit by an Indian president to Myanmar and this by itself indicates the importance New Delhi attaches to the visit. India has been cultivating Yangon for the past six -seven years firstly as it considers Myanmar as the gateway to ASEAN and secondly because Myanmar has been helpful in checking the insurgency menace in northeast India.
