[b]Indonesia and Aceh rebels signed peace agreement ending 30 years of fighting.[/b]

[b]Helsinki, 16 August, (Asiantribune.com):[/b] The Government of Indonesia and Free Aceh Movement (GAM) signed peace agreement on Monday at Helsinki ending nearly 30 years of fighting in the oil- and gas-rich province that killed 15,000 people.

By signing a peace agreement Government of Indonesia and the Free Aceh Movement have confirmed their commitment to a peaceful, comprehensive and sustainable solution to the conflict in Aceh as both parties signed the Memorandum of Understanding today August 15, 2005.

The Minister for Justice and Human Rights Hamid Awaludin of the Government of Indonesia and the chairman of the GAM negotiating delegation Malik Mahmud signed the Memorandum at a signing ceremony, witnessed by President Martti Ahtisaari, Chairman of Board of the Crisis Management Initiative.

The event was also attended by Erkki Tuomioja, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Finland, the Ambassador of the United Kingdom to Finland, Mr Matthew Kirk, representing the Presidency of the European Union, Aldo Dell’Ariccia, representing the European Commission, and representatives of ASEAN countries.

The accord, which became possible after GAM agreed to disarm and to renounce a demand for full independence, will be overseen by monitors from the European Union and Southeast Asian countries.
