Jaffna residents expects a major confrontation as LTTE intensifies its violence

Colombo, 24 December, ( Within the last 72 hours the LTTE has intensified its violence against the Sri Lanka government in the north (Jaffna), east (Batticaloa) and the west (Mannar). The escalating hit-and-run tactic of the LTTE indicates that they are determined to provoke the Sri Lankan Security Forces into a full-scale offensive in Jaffna.

Political observers also claimed that the current offensive of the LTTE is to put pressure on the international community and the Sri Lankan government to yield to their demands, particularly by withdrawing of troops from Jaffna for them to gain control. The main tactic of the LTTE has been target Security Forces not engaged in combat but travelling from one point to another.

This upsurge of violence is a violation (1) of the international Ceasefire Agreement signed with both the Sri Lankan government and the LTTE in Oslo and (2) the assurance given by Velupillai Prabhakaran on November 27 that some time will be given by the LTTE for the Sri Lankan government to come with a solution that would satisfy them.

The escalating violence has trapped the civilians of Jaffna in the cross-fire. Jaffna residents suspect that the current shadow war is bound to explode into a major confrontation with the troops sooner or later unless the international community takes some drastic steps to halt the violence of the LTTE. On the major confrontation is already planned and on the loop waiting to take the main line of action in case Sri Lanka Army fails to return to barracks.
