Colombo, 18 September, (Asiantribune.com): The Sinhalese nationalist party, Jathika Hela Urumiaya (JHU) is confident of President Kumaratunga backing SLFP Presidential candidate Mahinda Rajapakse, in the forthcoming Presidential elections.

“Whatever she has said, we feel that when she returns from USA with a fresh mind, that she will back Mr. Mahinda Rajapakse,” JHU Legal Advisor, Udaya Gammanpila told the “Asian Tribune.” He said when Kumaratunga became the Presidential candidate in 1994, she was instrumental in preparing the election manifesto and her mother, Sirimavo Bandaranaike, who was the party leader at the time, gave her the free will to do so.

“She was not the party leader, but Mrs. Bandaranaike, who was leading the SLFP 11 years ago, let Mrs. Kumaratunga implement policies and prepare the manifesto according to her own wishes,” he said, adding that he feels confident of the latter’s support for Rajapakse at this year’s election. Gammanpila said that there is a strong opinion in the country, especially from the SLFP and pro SLFP party followers that President Kumaratunga's support should be with Rajapakse, but pro-UNPers and their media always highlight something called a ‘division’, between the two, to arouse suspicion among people.
