Karens oppose dam construction across lower Salween.

Karen National Union has decried efforts by the Burmese generals to construct with the external aid the Hatgyi dam and the dam to be located in a site in the lower part of Salween River (Thanlwin River) in Karen State.

In a statement released to the press, Karen National Union (KNU) lambasted the State Peace and Development Council of Burma for deciding to construct the Hatgyi dam which would not only "jeopardize the security of the Karen people gravely, but also many villages and huge areas of arable lands and forests will become submerged."

The full text of the statement released by the Karen National Union is given below:

With external aid, the SPDC has started to implement the Hatgyi Dam Construction Project, the dam of which is to be located at a site in the lower part of Salween River (Thanlwin River) in Karen State. Regarding this matter, the KNU would like to state as follows.

* In the whole country of Burma as well as in the Karen State, there is no possibility for emergence of a freely elected government based on people’s participatory process. True peace cannot still be established in the whole of Burma as well as in the Karen State.
