[b]Colombo, 08 April, (Asiantribune.com):[/b] Vanniasingham Vigneswaran, leader of the District Tamil People's Forum in Trincomalee was gunned down near the Bank of Ceylon branch located in the Inner Harbor Road, Trincomalee, alleged to be by an unidentified person riding motorcycle around 9.30 a.m yesterday.

Sri Lanka Government was quick to condemn the slaying of Vigneswaran, who have spearheaded several protests over the a Buddhist statue last year, which was erected in a land close to the Trincomalee central bus stand that led to ethnic tensions.

"Vigneswaran was shot dead by unidentified gunmen on a motor bike," said Brig. Prasad Samarasinghe, military spokesman.

In the meantime, thrnee.com, a Tamil news portal based in Germany raised doubts by revealing that the killing resembles the hallmark of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam.
