Colombo, 25 November, (Asaintribune.com); Douglas Devananda, Leader of Eelam People’s Democratic Party (EPDP) and the newly appointed Social Services and Social Welfare Minister , said that they are awaiting the LTTE’s response to the government’s offer to restart peace negotiations. Velupillai Prabhakaran, the leader of the Tamil Tigers, is expected to make a statement indicating his response to the government’s offer in his speech on November 27 – the day after his birthday. It is also known as the Heroes’ Day where he makes his annual announcements. Prabhakaran will be 51 on November 26.

Following Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar’s assassination on August 13th the LTTE faced a severe backlash from the international community. To ward off the mounting international pressure the LTTE agreed to revise some aspects of the Cease-fire Agreement (CFA). However, talks on reviewing the CFA ran into a deadlock when the two parties failed to reach a consensus on the venue.

An unexpected Presidential election that came soon after, threw the issue further into the backburner. The LTTE then took up the position that it would announce their stand after the new government is elected. This announcement is expected on November 27.

Devananda, who has survived 11 attempts on his life by the LTTE, told the "Asian Tribune": "Let the LTTE announce their decision. Then we will respond."
