Man's arrest in assault delays deportation: Detained at airport

Toronto: An alleged Sri Lankan gang member has been arrested for a violent Scarborough assault that took place three days before he was to be deported to his homeland.

Peel police arrested Satheeskaran Sivarasa at Pearson airport on Monday when he showed up for his scheduled deportation. Instead of being put on a plane to South Asia, he was charged with two counts of assault.

Police are angry because Mr. Sivarasa, an alleged member of the Gilder Boys gang, was on the street only because the Immigration and Refugee Board set him free last June to await his deportation.

An immigrant from Sri Lanka, Mr. Sivarasa was taken into custody by immigration officials after accumulating several criminal convictions. But the IRB released him in December, 2002.
