[b]On Mervyn Silva's recommendation 'Kudu Lal' made a Justice of the Peace[/b]

[b]Colombo, 10 October:[/b] W D J Seneviratne, Minister of Justice and Justice Reforms told Divaina that Lal Peiris alias 'Kudu Lal' of Maligawatte said to be a leading underworld gang member dealing with drug trafficking was made an All Island Justice of the Peace on the recommendation of the Deputy Minister Mervyn Silva and said that he would pursue the newspaper reports to ascertain whether the assertions were true and if so he would be struck off the list of Justices of the Peace.

He said that the people's representatives had the opportunity of recommending names to be made Justices of the Peace and accordingly Lal Peiris' name was proposed to the Ministry of Justice by Mervyn Silva, Deputy Minister of Labor and Foreign Employment and Colombo District MP.

The Minister said that the police and the Grama Niladhari too has recommended that Lal Peiris was fit to be made a Justice of the Peace, but according to newspaper reports if this person is proved to be not suitable to be a Justice of the Peace, then he would be removed immediately. The Minister of Justice said that he had given instructions to officials of the Ministry of Justice to investigate whether Lal Peiris was involved in drug trafficking and submit a report to him on the findings.
