Naxalism poses long term challenge to India: US

Naxalism poses long term challenge to India: US

From M Rama Rao in New Delhi

New Delhi, 30 April ( The US State Department has voiced concern over Naxalite menace in India and cautioned that it may pose 'a significant long-term challenge'.

Naxalite violence, it points out, is growing in sophistication and lethality and it covers a broad region of eastern, central, and southern India. It however agrees with the Indian assessment that the series of high-profile terrorist attacks in Jammu and Kashmir even after the terrorists had lost their bases in POK in the October 8 earth quake are only an effort 'to prove their continued relevance'.

Some of these militant groups are believed to maintain ties to Al-Qaeda, it says.

'Country reports on terrorism', as the report is officially called, looks at the threats to internal security in Kashmir and elsewhere in India and the government's response to address the challenge. It termed as excellent India's record in protecting its nuclear assets from terrorists. It also appreciated the steps New Delhi is taking to 'further improve' the security of its strategic systems.
