Malaysia's national petroleum company to help develop its oil and gas resources, the national news agency Bernama reported.

Tyronne Fernando said Sri Lankan officials had begun early discussions with the state-owned Petroliam Nasional Bhd., or Petronas, for oil and gas exploration on the island-nation off the southern tip of India.

"Petronas has a very good record of drilling oil and gas all over the world and our relations with Malaysia are extremely good," Fernando said in an interview with Bernama.

Fernando, speaking during a two-day official visit, said he had also discussed the proposal with Malaysia's Foreign Minister Syed Hamid Albar.

Petronas operates oil and gas fields and related businesses in about 25 countries.
