Romesh Jayasinghe Appointed Sri Lanka’s New Foreign Secretary

Romesh Jayasinghe.jpgRomesh Jayasinghe, a senior Foreign Service officer who is currently the High Commissioner for Sri Lanka in New Delhi has been appointed by the President Mahinda Rajapaksa as the new Secretary to the Foreign Affairs Ministry with effect from October 01, 2009.

Mr. Jayasinghe succeeds Dr. Palitha T. B. Kohona, the present Secretary to the Foreign Affairs Ministry as he has been appointed as Sri Lanka’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York.

Jayasinghe who is the most senior career diplomat had received his school education at St. Joseph College, Mount Lavinia and graduated from the University of Kelaniya. His service in New Delhi is almost four years and had served several countries representing Sri Lanka since 1981.

Meanwhile, an Additional Secretary of the Foreign Affairs Ministry Prasad Kariyawasam who was also Sri Lanka’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York has been nominated to succeed Mr. Jayasinghe as Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner in New Delhi.

Sri Lanka’s former High Commissioner to the United Kingdom and currently a Director General of the Foreign Affairs Ministry Kshenuka Senewiratne has been appointed as Sri Lanka’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva.

An Additional Secretary of the Foreign Ministry and previously Sri Lanka’s Ambassador in Paris C Wagiswara has been appointed as High Commissioner to Canada. A Director General of the Ministry Ahamed. A. Jawad who was former Sri Lanka’s Ambassador in Norway has been appointed as Ambassador to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Senior Attorney at Law Sarath Weragoda as Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh and former Chief of Defence Staff and Air Chief Marshall Donald Perera has been appointed as Ambassador to Israel.

Former Governor of the Northern Province Dixon Dela Bandara has been appointed as High Commissioner to the Maldives and former Deputy Minister Bennet Cooray as the Ambassador to the Philippines. Attorney at Law Sarath Wijesinghe has also been appointed as Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates.
