IT education pioneer SLIIT notches 10 years successfully
Over 10,000 IT Graduates and professionals and academic of Sri Lanka’s leading IT Degree awarding Institute, the Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology (SLIIT) is celebrating its 10th Anniversary this year. Those graduated from SLIIT comprise around one third of Sri Lanka’s It professional workforce.
SLIIT was created to educate and train ICT professionals, scientists and engineers with the aim of developing a skilled cadre of professionals much needed for the development of a robust and sustainable IT industry in Sri Lanka and in this sphere SLIIT has played a major role in providing university education for students and some of them have reached the pinnacle of their professions.
To mark their 10th anniversary, SLIIT would be involved in a series of activities such as software development competition for school children. The Island-wide school software competition conducted by the Ministry of Education is aimed at popularizing techniques required for developing software; vital for the future progress of the nation. The work of the 10 finalists will be displayed at the Malabe campus under the them of the 10th Anniversary Achievers.
Prof S Karunaratne, Chairman, SLIIT said that the 10th anniversary will be celebrated as an important milestone in the history of SLIIT that has succeeded in becoming the largest and leading degree awarding institute in the field of Information Technology in Sri Lanka, committed to bring the best of the education and training.
He said that SLIIT has the infrastructure and teaching resources to ensure world class learning experience on par with that of leading universities in the region.
He said that the software competition provides students across the nation an opportunity to apply their classroom knowledge to real world situations and come up with innovative and practical solutions. Over 40 schools from all districts in the country are participating in this competition which is open to year 8 to 11 students and the schools are free to submit multiple teams, each supervised by a teacher.
He said that the top ten winners will receive prizes ranging from notebook computers, desktops, USB hard disks and will be entitled to follow selected SLIIT short-term courses.
Prof Lalith Gamage, Managing Director, President and CEO, SLIIT said that they place great emphasis on the quality of their education programmes and of their graduates and the 10th anniversary is an opportune moment to create awareness of the great progress they have made that has a definite positive impact on the nation as a whole.
