Huma Waseem, wife of Pakistani star cricket player Waseem Akram, has passed away at a Chennai hospital, India on Sunday morning.
She had suffered a renal failure in Lahore itself and was being flown to Singapore in an air ambulance for treatment when she developed complications, leading to emergency landing at Chennai on Oct 20 last.
She was rushed to Apollo Hospital and was admitted to Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the hospital. Huma was on ventilator and her condition remained critical, Hospital sources said on Thursday.
Shahid Malik, Pakistan High Commissioner to India, telephoned Wasim Akram, former Captain of Pakistan cricket team on Thursday in Chennai to inquire about health of his ailing wife. His cricket peers also enquired about Huma Akram.
The High Commissioner while extending full cooperation to Wasim Akram prayed for early recovery of his wife. Shahid Malik also spoke to Dr. Reddy of the Apollo hospital.
Dr Venkataraman of the Apollo Hospitals, who was treating her, told reporters on Sunday that she died at 9.25 a.m. after suffering a cardiac arrest. she died without regaining consciousness.
In 1999 Wasim Akram received a rare standing ovation from Chennaites after leading Pakistan to a memorable win against India in a closely fought Test match here.
By a quirk of fate a decade later, a worried Akram landed in Chennai for treatment to his wife. Although he was overwhelmed by the outpouring of concern and support from friends and fans for the quick recovery of his wife Huma, battling for life under dramatic circumstances, he could not save his wife.
