Sri Lanka: Senior DIG Balasuriya Appointed as new IGP
Senior DIG Mahinda Balasuriya has been appointed as Sri Lanka’s 32nd Inspector General of Police (IGP) by President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday (November 02) and new IGP is due to assume duties this morning, Police Media Spokesman DIG Nimal Mediwaka said.
New IGP had received his primary education from Ananda College in Colombo and had joined the Sri Lanka Police in 1978 as a trainee Assistant Superintend of Police. Since joining the Police, he has held a number of key posts, including those of Senior DIG, Range I and Range III.
He also supervised police coverage of the North and East for three years, and was the Special Task Force (STF) Senior DIG in operations against the LTTE. He has been closely involved in the resettlement of displaced persons in the North and East provinces during last few months.
IGP Balasuriya is presently reading for his PhD at the Department of Political Science in the University of Peradeniya and presently working on “LTTE terrorism and National Security in Sri Lanka” for his doctoral thesis.
He fills the vacancy created by the retirement of his predecessor IGP Jayantha Wickremaratne who retired from office yesterday.
