Fresh incidence of fishermen arrest by the Lankan Navy is being reported, causing tension among the fisherfolk again.
Eighteen fishermen who ventured into sea by five boats from the coastal village Jegadapattinam, about 75 km Pudukottai on Monday, were reported to have been arrested late last night by the Sri Lankan Naval personnel. Their boats have also been seized, it is said.
According to official sources, the fishermen went out for fishing in about 750 boats on Monday and were scheduled to return on Tuesday. While eighteen of them were fishing in the mid seas in five boats, they were surrounded by the Lankan Navy personnel. They were detained along with their boats, and one of them conveyed the message by his cell to his association office bearers on shore.
President of the Jegadapattinam Fishermen’s Welfare Association G. Ramakrishnan, condemning the arrest of the fishermen by the Lankan Navy well within the Indian borders, demanded immediate action by the State and Central governments to protect the life and property of fishermen of Pudukottai district.
The names of the arrested fishermen are: A. Veeradas (20); P. Prakash (22); K. Sudhan (20); Rathinam (22); V. Appuraj (45); S. Ravi (40); T. Subramanian (40); R. Sakthivel (24); R. Mohanasundar (24); Ponmani (20); S. Subramanian (55); K. Nagaraj (40); R. Rangasami (50); S. Mohan (20); J. Mathi (26); J. Karthick (18); J. Tirumurugan (23); and S. Dakshinamurthy (55).
Their boat Nos are: TN 06 756, TN 06 52, TN 06 53, TN 06 700 and TN 06 39
District Collector A. Suganthi accompanied by the Fisheries Department officials rushed to Jegadapattinam and held a meeting with the representatives of the fisherfolk.
5 Lankan fishermen arrested off Chennai.
Five Sri Lankan fishermen, found fishing near the Andhra Pradesh coast, have been apprehended by an Indian Coast Guard team. They were handed over to the Fishing Harbour police here on Saturday.
Police sources said they were produced at the Egmore court, which remanded them to custody. They were sent to the Puzhal prison.

There appears to be a need for greater cooperation between Sri Lanka and India to prevent fisherman crossing the borders and to arrest the smugglers, including the people smugglers who are damaging the image of Sri Lanka.
