The Northern Province Governor Major General (retired) G.A. Chandrasiri says that the Government has spent a lot of money for the development process of the northern province and the recipients of those benefits have a responsibility to join in the development process.
The Governor revealed that the University of Jaffna produces hundreds of doctors annually. “But, the pathetic situation is 95 per cent of them want to be employed in Colombo.
They also make influences through the Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA). The time has come to change this attitude as the President Mahinda Rajapaksa has taken a keen interest on developing the war torn areas in an accelerated program”, the Governor said.
He further stressed that the foundation of the Mahinda Chinthanaya is the equality and every nook and corner of the country will be given same facilities. “The people in the relevant area have an enormous task in this process. They can’t just be away from the development process”, the Governor pointed out.
He also revealed that plans are under way to build a new ward with 200 beds for the Vavuniya Teaching Hospital. Over 100 male and female nurses and 150 mid wives are recruited last week attaching them to the Nursing College, Vavuniya.
The Vavuniya hospital has also been provided with a new ward for pregnant mothers and a labor-room at a cost of Rs.18 million last week. A surgical ward for heart patients have also been built and had handed over it to the general public last week at a function attended by the Health Care and Nutrition Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva.
The Northern Governor Chandrasiri also revealed that these developments were assisted by the Red Cross in Germany, Japanese Government, World Helth Organisation, Medicine Team International and UNICEF.
At the same time, he also revealed that the international or other assistance is received only around 10 per cent and 90 per cent of the giant work process is met by the Sri Lankan Government under the Northern Spring (Uhuru Wasanthaya) program which is led by Parliamentarian Basil Rajapaksa.
