Minister's slap triggers civil servants' protests in Nepal

By Kosh R. Koirala reporting from Nepal
Kathmandu, 12 November, (Asiantribune.com):

Government employees across the country on Wednesday staged demonstration after a junior minister in the cabinet physically assaulted a senior government official on Tuesday.

The agitating government employees picketed the Agriculture and Cooperative Ministry in Kathmandu and shut government offices in various Tarai districts including Bara and Parsa demanding resignation of State Minister for Agriculture and Cooperatives Karima Begum.

State Minister Begum had slapped Chief District Officer (CDO) of Parsa Durga Prasad Bhandari, alleging that he sent an ‘old’ vehicle to pick her up from a local airport. Officials said it was the best they could do since all its vehicles had gone out on official work.

State Minister Begum had reached to Birgunj, a small town lying in southern parts of the country, in Parsa district to inaugurate a function.

The agitating employees also staged ‘pen down’ for two hours, demanding action against the minister and public apology over the ‘disgraceful act’. They have vowed to continue with the protests unless their demands were met by the government.

Begum belongs to the ruling Madhesi People’s Rights Forum-Democratic (MPRF-D) that split from the biggest Terai party Madhesi People’s Rights Forum this year with the intention of joining the government.

Amidst increasing protests from various quarters, local administration in Parsa district has filed a case under Public Offense Act against the state minister. Officials said the state minister will be arrested and taken action as per the provisions made in the Act.
