Sarath Fonseka tenders his resignation

Colombo, 12 November, (Asiantribune.com):

Sarath3_1.jpgGeneral Sarath Fonseka, Sri Lanka’s Chief of Defence Staff has tendered his resignation this morning.

Asian Tribune learnt that the resignation letter was handed over to Mr. Lalith Weeratunga the Secretary to the President.

Sarath Fonseka had asked for his resignation to be effective from December 1.

He had offered his resignation immediately after attending the official welcome ceremony for the visiting Myanmar General Than Shwe.

It is learnt that in his letter of resignation, he has indicated 16 reasons to take such a decision

According to the provision under the Chief of Staff Defence Act No: 35 of 2009, ‘Notwithstanding to the provision of the subsection 3 (1) the Chief of Defence Staff who tenders his resignation shall not be relieved of duties of his appointment till the acceptance of such resignation by the President is notified to him in writing.’

General Sarath Fonseka was elevated as the Chief of staff over Admiral Wasantha Karannagoda, former Commander of the Sri Lanka Navy.

It is reliably learnt that Sarath Fonseka has tendered his resignation to contest in the forthcoming presidential elections against his Commander in Chief, who did everything to him, even in finding a private sponsor for his two daughters’ education in Olkahama, USA.

General Fonseka is our Army

General Fonseka is our Army war hero, and will always be that. Let us wait and see what he does for his country in times of Peace. We are sure his common sense will prevail in all his actions. We need you, General Fonseka, may be now more than before, to ACT WITH GREAT WISDOM for your country !

The race is on for the

The race is on for the Sinhala votes. Tamils have nothing to do with either of them. Few months ago, every Sinhalese poured prise on the general and over night he has become a traitor, even to the editor of this e-news. What a shame. Now SF realises how corrupt and insincere MR and his gang is.

Only option SF has is to accept some form of deal with the US Govt., so that he can go there and live rest of his life. He will be subjected to the same treatment in sri Lanka as the Tamils and others who raised their voice against this regime.

I always said for a militarised govt. or that matter to an organisation, peace is more troublesome than war time. Look what happened to LTTE and Parabakaran; Ranil with a stroke of a pen with the peace agreement killed the movement and him. Now, MR and his cronies are under the sword. God helps Sri Lanka and its people

The General is a strategist,

The General is a strategist, and he delivered Sri Lanka from a terrorist war that had been declared by many as "unwinnable". One can only hope (almost against hope) therefore, that this move leads to something better for Sri Lanka, although on the face of it, it appears that the General's move dashes the hopes of the Sinhalese people....for it seems they can never stand together united even after having eliminated a determined enemy, into building the nation up from where it had suffered so terribly for over 3 decades at the hands of the separatist LTTE.
The lessons of that dark period of recent history should be the greatest learning experience for the Sinhalese for centuries to come. Democracy is what will be put to the test in Sri Lanka in the days and weeks to come, and the resilience of a people who have had to stand up to assault from many sides (which included those who were considered friends), but managed to keep their heads raised with dignity in the face of unwarranted attacks, is going to be tested in ways as never before.

If Sarath Fonseka resigned to

If Sarath Fonseka resigned to contest for the presidential election that is going to be held next year as the candidate from the newly formed party headed by UNP, that must be the end of his fame as well as humanity. He was regarded as a brave chief of the Army who gave a strong leadership to defeat the LTTE terrorism from the Sri Lankan soil but if he is going to be a cat's paw of some conspirators including both international and national elements that are making strenuous efforts overthrow the present government and its leader, he will surely be a traitor for his motherland. Being an Army general, he should act with much sagacity rather than his emotions which will ultimately lead him to a mirage rather than a promising land or greener pastures.

Greediness Brings Sorrow =

Greediness Brings Sorrow = Thanhaya Jayathi Soko!!!

What a funny coincidence! Ravi Karunanayake breaks the news that General has resigned at 1.30pm!! This guy who said during the war “Army is going to Pamankada, instead of Alimankada”…………so on.
As long as General Fonseka refrains from dirty politics in Sri Lanka, all patriotic Sri Lankan will respect him as a Great War Hero. Due to ignorance, arrogance and greediness, if he associates with UNP, JVP and other loosers, HE WILL BE ONE OF THEM and will face the same destiny like other military veterans. I wish him good luck! But not “ANICHCHAVATA SANKARA = EVERYTHING IS IMPERMENANT!!!

It seems the looser

It seems the looser politicians and hell bent UNPrs want Sarath Fonseka to be their common candidate. Sarath Fonseka in his previous interviews with the media has always maintained that he has no political ambitions. I wish he will maintain his words and leave the Sri Lankan shores for greener pastures in the US very soon. If he dares to enter the politics of Ranil and Co., he should be considered as anybody with similar interests on himself than the country. He was a senior commander most of the 30 years where LTTE ruled, and who knew Fonseka? An obscure Army officer at the verge of retirement, the President made him the Army Commander. He did not bring any strategy, but it was the Defense Secretary of Fonska’s vintage who did all the ground work for the splendid victory of the Armed Forces. Sarath Fonseka with his foul mouth almost derailed the war several times. It is good even late the government identified his loose character. The opposition who is lining behind Fonseka better watch for the skeletons in his cupboard. There is a famous gossip in the Army circles how Fonseka got personally involved in managing Army Holiday Bungalows. If he becomes a candidate in politics those details should be made available to the common masses. How soon a hero has become a zero.

To win the war what comes

To win the war what comes first ?
political leadership !
The great General Kobbekaduwa could have done the same - but he didn't get the political backing.
