Executive Presidency No More a Valid Slogan – Minister Senarathne

By Anjana Jayashan in Colombo
Colombo, 24 November, (Asiantribune.com):

Abolition of the executive presidency is no more an election slogan and people will not be ready to listen to such old stories. Anyway, the main Opposition; United National Party (UNP) and the People’s Liberation Front (JVP) still talk on the topic as they have already politically bankrupted, said Construction & Engineering Services Minister Dr. Rajitha Senarathne.

Minister Senarathne said that the UNP has failed to select a suitable candidate for the presidential election due in recent future. “It is a party which given life and energy by great leaders like D.S.Senanayake and Dudley Senanayake. The era is no more”, the minister added.

“UNP stalwarts like late Lalith Athulathmudali and late Gamini Dissanayake once wanted to change the executive president system. But, at the time present UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe went against the move”, Minister Senarathne said.

He further said that the JVP too who claimed for the abolition of the executive presidency as the election was nearing, had accepted the ministerial portfolios, completely forgetting their policies under the Chandrika Kumarathunga government.

Meanwhile, Media Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena addressing a press briefing said that the executive presidency system directly assisted in the process of defeating the LTTE terror outfit which halted the country’s development for a period of 30 years.

Jathika Nidahas Peramuna Leader Wimal Weerawansha addressing a party rally in Kandy had expressed that the abolition of the executive Presidency will be considered only in the end of the second term of the President Mahinda Rajapksa.

It is true. Exceutive

It is true. Exceutive Presidency will never be a valid slogan as long as MR is the President. So will it be if Dr. Rajitha Senaratne becomes the Executive President. It is always a valid reason for those who dream of becoming the Exceutive President but realize that the chances are remote. So my dear Dr. Senaratne, focus on uplifting the construction industry without wasting your valuable time on invalid things.

I cannot understand how

I cannot understand how politics works. The very people who introduced and defended the Presidential System of Governess now trying to portray that they are against it. For 18 long years, Ranil Wickramasinghe and the co enjoyed the privileges of the Executive Presidency. They were even democratic enough to debar the opposition candidate from elections even after the Supreme Court has given a negative judgment. These people now try to portray that they are against the very constitution they created. As Premadasa once said these people blame the constitution when it is not in their hand. This is what the other stalwarts Athulathmudali and Disanayake were trying to do when Premadsa was in power. If the government was in their power they would never have petitioned the supreme court of its un-constitutionality.

JVP is the other party without any principle. Under Mrs. Bandaranaike they got a licking with over 60,000 members getting killed. However the leadership survived and led a life of affluence until they waged a similar uprising under Premadasa. They got another licking with over 40,000 loyal members getting killed. However, current leader Somawansa Amarasinghe using his connections to Sirisena Cooray managed to find his way to England where his family lives. He is doing socialism in Sri Lanka while having his family parked in England with abundance and affluence.

The details of the common candidate yet to be made public. Sarath Fonseka’s brother in law Brigadier Thilakaratne had become a big commission agent. SF’s son in law is the mole planted in America to collect the commissions for the General. The commissions collected by Fonseka family are believed to run in to millions of dollars. They have a Pakistani agent housed in a flat purchased by this son-in-law for 1.5million dollars in Colombo. However the General made a big commotion about accommodation when he leaves official bungalow, when he have several houses in Colombo.

Danuna Thilakaratne, the son in law of SF, floated Hicorp International in Oklahama where his daughter lives, and also another company British Borneo Defense he floated in Texas. There were several Senior Army officers aid and abetted the scheme to collect commissions for the Fonsekas. General Thoradeniya, General Mahesh Senanayake, General Jayanath Perera, Brigadier Fydel Meedin and Colonel Rohan Wijesundara were involved in this trail. One of the reasons for SF to fall out with the President and Gotabaya was disagreement on promotions of General’s loyalists.
