Colombo, 24 November, (Asiantribune.com):
President Mahinda Rajapaksa proclaimed that he will seek a fresh mandate as per constitutional provision and this has been duly gazetted (Gazette Notification No. 1629/8/20091123), short while ago, said Lalith Weeratunga, Secretary to the President.
According to the Constitution, an incumbent President, if he/she so wishes, can opt to seek a fresh mandate from the people upon completing four years in office. The Elections Commissioner is thereby empowered to set a deadline for nominations as well as the date of the Presidential Election.
