Show cause notice for contempt to 4 top brass in police-lawyer clash case

The Madras High Court has directed four top state police officials, connected with the February 19 violent clashes between police and lawyers, to appear before the Division Bench on a suo moto contempt.

When the matter came up for hearing before a division bench comprising Mr. Justice F M Ibrahim Kalifulla and Ms Justice R Bhanumathi, the representatives of the Advocates Association submitted that the top police officials have not responded to the notice issued by the court to them, till date.

The Bench then directed the Additional Director General of Police, K Radhakrishnan, who was the then Chennai City Police Commissioner, the then Addditional City Police Commissioner A K Viswanathan, Joint Commissioner Ramasubramanian and then Deputy Commissioner Prem Anand Sinha to appear before the Bench on December 18

"The named policemen be held ‘squarely responsible’ for all incidents on that day”, the Bench said and directed the court to issue show cause notice as to why contempt of court should not be initiated." The bench further said, no apology in this regard will be entertained.

It may be recalled, that the Division Bench on October 30, had fixed these police officials responsible for the police excesses and asked the state government to exercise its discretion to suspend them.

The Bench had also directed the state government to initiate disciplinary action against them as the attack of the police was an assault on the judiciary. While chasing the lawyers, scores of vehicles were damaged, many lawyers and litigant public including women and a district judge were injured and entire judiciary was paralyzed throughout the state.
