Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickramanayaka and Minister Bogollagama to attend CHOGM 2009

Colombo, 26 November, (Asiantribune.com):

Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickramanayaka, on behalf of President Mahinda Rajapaksa, will represent Sri Lanka at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) being held this year in Port of Spain, Trinidad & Tobago from 27 – 29 November 2009.

The Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) is held every two years thus providing an opportunity for Commonwealth leaders to meet to discuss global and Commonwealth issues.

The theme of CHOGM 2009 is “Partnering for a More Equitable and Sustainable Future.”

During the sessions, a number of important subjects such as Climate Change, the Global Economic Situation, Reform of International Institutions, Trade, Terrorism, Food Security, the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals and Youth related issues will also be addressed by the leaders.

Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama will represent Sri Lanka at the Ministerial Meetings and thereafter join the Prime Minister at the Executive Sessions and other sessions of the Heads of State/Government.

The Minister will also represent Sri Lanka at a number of meetings that are customarily held on the sidelines of CHOGM, including the pre-CHOGM Commonwealth Foreign Ministers Meeting and the meeting of the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG). Among his other engagements are participation in the Foreign Ministers’ dialogue with the civil society and a live TV Forum.

Both Prime Minister Wickramanayaka and Foreign Minister Bogollagama will have a number of bilateral meetings with their counterparts on the sidelines of CHOGM 2009.
