The opposition’s presidential candidate General Sarath Fonseka’s controversial statement just cannot be neglected and as it had done a grave damage to the country, Minister Anura Priyadarshana Yapa said.
Whether he was misquoted by that newspaper or really made that statement is irrelevant now as the government has to answer the international community, Mass Media and Information Minister Anura Priyadarshana Yapa said at the weekly cabinet briefing held at the Government Information Department, Colombo yesterday (December 24).
Minister Yapa said that the statement was not for a senior officer like a Chief of Defence Staff or an Army Commander. ‘If he was just a civilian, the UN or any international organization won’t take it serous. As a responsible government, we do not have any worries of facing the situation. But the damage done cannot be easily set aright or forgotten”, the Minister added.
Minister also added that members of the three armed forces were faced with a great risk as a result of this statement.
“It is very dangerous for the Sri Lankan armed forces personnel to go abroad without fear to go abroad. This is the legal situation. When General Sarath Fonseka makes such a statement and the so called newspaper stands by the story which it carried, the UN Security Council has the power to order the International War Crimes Tribunal to launch an investigation', the Minister pointed out.
