Debate on corruption - "Send at least a crow if the lion cannot come" , Says Wimal Weerawansa to Fonseka

Dr.P.A.Samaraweera - Australia

On the New Year day's message Gen.(Rtd.) Fonseka says, "...On this auspicious day, I would like to promise all citizens of Sri Lanka that if one family rule and corruption is defeated in the forthcoming election it will be with rejoicing hearts and as a united nation that will see the year through..."

In meetings as well Gen. Fonseka claims that he took to politics because of his ambition to establish a clean administration free of bribery, corruption and all types of vices.

Until a few weeks ago he had declined any intention of getting involved in politics and his sudden interest came like a bolt from the blue. As such, the election is being watched by almost everyone as this is the first time that an "outsider", a person who had not been actively involved in politics has come forward to contest the Presidential election. And as he has no party as such he is leaning against the UNP and the JVP who have diametrically opposed ideologies.

Now the topic highlighted by both parties is 'corruption' and the two camps are pointing the finger at each other. Gen. Fonseka says he came forward because of corruption. JNP leader Wimal Weerawansa says he wants a debate with Fonseka on corruption.

He alleges that while General Fonseka was Army Commander he had engaged in arms deals and favoured offering tenders to his son-in-law's Company, HI-Corp. Ltd.

So according Weerawansa Gen. Fonseka by talking about corruption is running with the fox and hunting with the hound. For this debate on corruption, "Send at least a crow if the lion cannot come" says Wimal Weerawansa. Therefore, Gen. Fonseka should come clean by having a debate on this controversial issue which is now under public scrutiny.
