Main Opposition Parties in a Conspiracy to Defeat their own Candidate – S.B.Dissanayake

By Anjana Jayashan in Colombo
Colombo, 02 January, (Asiantribune.com):

No extra effort on the election campaign is needed from the United Peoples Freedom Alliance candidate President Mahinda Rajapaksa, as the UNP has already involved in a serious effort to defeat the opposition candidate, retired General Sarath Fonseka, said the former UNP stalwart S.B. Dissanayake.

Veteran politician Dissanayake said that it was a well planned conspiracy hatched to defeat its candidate. He also said efforts of the opposition parties to bring back former Chandrika Kumaranatunga onto Fonseka’s stage, too will bring about serious damage on their candidate, as the former President was not in people’s hearts and she had already become a political discard.

Addressing a press briefing in Colombo, Dissanayake said that there is a rumour that Chandrika Kumaratunga was intending to support the UNP and Fonseka."If she does it, United Peoples Freedom Alliance candidate Mahinda Rajapaksa will get more votes", he said.

He further said that United National Party leader Ranil Wickremesinghe’s dream was the next presidential election and he had no plan or idea to drive General Fonseka to the path of victory.

Another UNP former stalwart Minister Johnston Fernando, who crossed over to the ruling UPFA last month, joining the press conference said that both Ranil Wickremesinghe and his wife Maithree Wickremesinghe too will vote for United Peoples Freedom Alliance candidate Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Deputy Minister Indika Bandaranayake who crossed over to the government side with Johnston Fernando also joined the press briefing and said that the main opposition United National Party will end its lifespan as a political outfit, after this presidential election.
