Sri Lanka maintains better health standards in the region – Dr. Prasanna Cooray

By Anjana Jayashan
Colombo, 09 January (Asiantribune.com):

President Mahinda Rajapaksa defeated not only the LTTE terror outfit but he also defeated the another enemy of the country—the enemy which had obstructed the economic development of the country. This was the general feeling brought out by several professionals who gathered at the Ministry of Mass Media and Information to express their solidarity to President Rajapaksa.

Here is the opinion of few learned notables:

President Mahinda Rajapaksa had embarked upon a campaign to eradicate the menace of liquor, drugs and narcotics, and saved the people at the correct time, said Professor Carlo Fonseka who joined at the gathering.

Prof. Fonseka quoting some statistics said that the established authority on Tobacco and Alcohol had done a revenue Rs.17 million last year. He also said that even after being in the medical field several decades, he was unable to agree with what opposition’s main common candidate General Sarath Fonseka's statement that consumption of alcohol activated the brain cells.

"There is no medical evidence to prove Sarath Fonseka's view and I have never heard it before this", he added. Prof. Fonseka also added that only a leader like President Rajapaksa can build a liquor, drugs and tobacco free society.

Dr. Prasanna Cooray, who was present with Prof. Fonseka and Prof. Mandis Rohanadheera, said that the health standard of Sri Lanka was better than any other country in the world especially in the South Asian region. He added that a high progress was shown in the public health sector during the past four years, even while a war was fought in the North and East.

Prof. Mendis Rohanadheera said that some sections of Tamil National Alliance which desired the separation of this country have decided to support Gen. Sararth Fonseka at the forthcoming presidential election. They clearly know that their petty political wishes could be achieved only through Ranil Wickremesinghe and not through President Mahinda Rajapaksha.
