All Sri Lankan Peace-Keepers in Haiti are Safe - Military Spokesman

Colombo, 14 January, (Asiantribune.com):

An All Sri Lankan soldier on a peace-keeping mission in the Latin American country of Haiti are safe and has not suffered any mishaps.

Thousands were feared dead in a major earthquake that erupted on 13 January in Haiti, that destroyed the presidential palace, schools, hospitals and hillside shanties.

Some 9,000 U.N. police and troops are stationed in Haiti to maintain order and many countries were trying to determine the welfare of their personnel.

Sri Lanka’s Military spokesman Brigadier Nanayakara speaking to Asian Tribune said, Sri Lankan Peace-keepers are safe.

Brigadier Nanayakkara said that there are 950 Sri Lankan peace keepers in Haiti and fortunately they all are located in five different places outside the city.

“Anyway, with the incident of earthquake in Haiti, we had lost all the communications but subsequently we managed to contact them . We learnt with sigh of relief that “All are safe”, Brigadier Nanayakkara added.

As foreign media reported that the UN peacekeeping building in Haiti had collapsed and there were reports of casualties among UN staff following massive quake experienced almost after 200 years, Sri Lanka expressed immediate concern over the peacekeepers.

The Tuesday night’s earthquake has caused massive devastation and killed untold numbers.
