By Anjana Jayashan in Colombo
Colombo, 14 January, (Asiantribune.com):

Presidential candidate Sarath Kongahag has filed a Fundamental Rights (FR) petition in the Supreme Court on Wednesday (January 13), challenging the candidacy of the opposition candidate, former Army Commander Sarath Fonseka in the upcoming Presidential election.

Kongahage who is contesting the presidential elections representing the United National Alternative Front , first brought the complaint against the retired General Fonseka on the day of filing the nomination, to the Elections Commissioner.

The Presidential candidate Kongahage alleged that Sarath Fonseka was a US citizen and it was against the law to contest in the presidential election. His challenge was dismissed by the Election Commissioner for want of documentary evidence to support the allegation.

Retired General Fonseka is contesting in the presidential election representing the New Democratic Front, with the support of the main opposition United National Party and the People’s Liberation Front (JVP).

In the Sri Lanka’s Presidential poll, 22 candidates are in the fray and already the postal voting which started on 12 – 13 January is over and the polling is scheduled for 26 January.
