Postal Voting Ends with No Major Incidents
Postal voting for the Presidential elections 2010 which took place on January 12 and 13 ended with no major incidents having voted more than 80 percent, the National Polls Observation Centre and the People’s Action for Free and Fair Election (PAFFREL) announced.
Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa said that he is grateful to the patriotic state sector employees and Security Forces personnel for casting their votes with the vision of safeguarding the national interest.
PAFFREL Executive Director Rohana Hettiarachchi said that comparing to other elections, voters had an interest to cast their votes and according to their observations over 80 percent estimated voters had cast their votes.
The National Polls Observation Centre convener Prasanna Adikari speaking to the Asian Tribune said that the two days allocated for the postal voting ended without any major incidents and casting of votes all over the island was satisfactory compared to the previous elections. He said that only a few minor incidents like displaying the party symbols etc were recorded.
A total of 401,118 were qualified for the postal voting after rejecting 57,036 postal voting applications as being not in order. Applications for the postal votes were accepted from November 27, to December 07, 2009.
The Elections Secretariat further said that those who failed to cast their votes on the given two days will be facilitated to vote on January 26.
