By Anjana Jayashan in Colombo
Colombo, 16 January, (Asiantribune.com):

As soon as the victory of the President Mahinda Rajapaksa in this Presidential Election, the Parliament will be dissolved and will go for a general election, said by Media Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardene at a press briefing held at the Media Ministry premises yesterday .

The Media Minister said that a constitutional change is necessary at this moment and they will seek the support of the opposition parties in the Parliament to change the present Constitution. He also said that unless they (the Opposition) support the process, the government has planned to do it in a new Parliament.

“Changing the electoral system is one of the major requirements through a constitutional change. An electoral base poll system which protects the minorities’ rights” is our plan and such a parliament is directly responsible for the public.” the Media Minister added.

He further explained that the general public should be made the decision makers and the stake holders of the development proceedings. “The societies like “Jana Sabha” will be introduced and the present electoral system which waste public funds in vain should be cancelled”, Minister Abeywardene said.

He also added a senate will also be introduced allowing the intellectuals and religious leaders to join in the decision making process for the administration and development of the country.
