Dr. Jayalath Jayawardana welcomes Tamil refugees back homeland soon
Former Minister and Member of Parliament of Sri Lanka Dr. Jayalath Jayawardana said in Chennai that his UNP would ensure democracy in the island nation if their Presidential candidate nominee Gen. Sarath Fonseka is voted to power.
Stating that major political parties including UNP and Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) came to a common platform for the first time in Sri Lanka to create a democracy, he said "he (Fonseka) and his supportive parties included will also ensure to setup an independent Election Commission, independent Police Commission and also an independent Public Service Commission in Sri Lanka", he added.
Jayawardana said his party supported to choose a common candidate in order to also protect the 'fundamental rights' , human rights of the Sri Lankan people and also to protect the rights of Sri Lankan media.
Jayawardana also alleged that the present Rajapaksa government failed in all fronts including to control the law and order problem, to control the price rise of essential commodoties and failed to address unemployment problem.
He alleged the Internally Displaced People (IDP) camps in northern Sri Lanka were built illegally and against UN specifications and people lodged over there were suffering for proper food and medicines.
MPs right to visit the camps
Dr. Jayawardene termed the recent tour of MPs from Tamil Nadu to Sri Lanka to know the 'ground reality' of the IDPs, as a 'guided tour' and also alleged that Sri Lankan government refused to give permission to Sri Lankan MPs to visit the camps. “The Parliamentarians and Magistrates had the right to visit even the prisons. It is denied in the matter of visit to the IDPs by local MPs.” A group of MPs have gone to the court on this matter, he said.
"They (TN MPs) were taken to selective camps. This is our own people. If they can see, we also have the rights to see them", he added.
He lauded the efforts of Tamil Nadu government, which ensured good living of Sri Lankan refugees living here, in 105 camps. He was appreciative of the slew of concessions showered on them.
Jayawardana invited those refugees living in various camps in Tamil Nadu should come back to their motherland as soon as possible. There are 75,000 refugees living in Tamil Nadu in the camps and about 50,000 out of it, he said.

This man is a disgrace to Sri
This man is a disgrace to Sri Lanka. He should visit Louisiana in the USA even after 5 years how the residents are treated. Majority of the people are still living in the other states due to lack of assistance rendered to them to return home. Indian camps are no better than the IDP camps in Sri Lanka. Anyway the problem was created not by the government but by the LTTE elusive leader for holding so many people as buffer for their own protection. Within 6-7 months Sri Lankan government has done reasonably well to return most of them home. After all most of their homesteads were mined by the LTTE making it immediate rerun home. LTTE is responsible for this terrible outcome.
Mr. Jayalath talking of negatives of the government has not given credit to the government at least once for getting rid of the terrorist. Thank God most of these foul mouths can freely walks the land without any fear of their lives thanks to the Government. The UNP lining up with old LTTE elements makes life uncomfortable to majority of the Tamils. This weakness of the government allowed majority Tamils to silence voicing their displeasure on LTTE due to fear. I wish UNP will not return to power to punish the Tamils who are against LTTE philosophy.
Another Tiger in Sri Lanka.
Another Tiger in Sri Lanka. These people should be rejected by the whole patriotic people both in and out SriLanka
