Celebrating Thai Pongal at the Foreign Ministry

Colombo, 20 January, (Asiantribune.com):

The Thai Pongal festival was celebrated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on 19 January 2010 under the patronage of Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama.

The celebrations commenced with a pooja conducted by Siva Sri Mahendran Kurukkal of the Dehiwala Vishnu temple followed by Bharathanatyam dance recitals.

Brahmasri S. Kuhanantha Sharma, Incumbent and Hereditary Priest of the Pillayar Kovil, Punnalaikadduvan, spoke on the significance of Thai Pongal. He said that the occasion was dedicated to the Sun God and that felicitation of the Sun began 5000 years ago.

Swami Rajeswaranandaje Maharaj of the Swami Ramakrishna Mission in Wellawatta also delivered a speech in which he stated that the Thai Pongal began as a farmer’s festival and has become a social one. He further stated that “in our own fields we are all farmers doing our duties with hard work and dedication”.

Addressing the gathering, Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama welcoming those present stated that Hindhuism has been a part of Sri Lanka’s culture dating back to centuries. He said “…its adds to the diversity of cultures and religions that make up Sri Lanka that is united in terms of one nation”. Minister Bogollagama further stated that celebrating all cultural and religious festivals has become a part of the traditions of the Foreign Ministry. He also said that this was the first time the Ministry was celebrating Thai Pongal in a free country. Minister Bogollagama concluded wishing everyone present a happy Thai Pongal and a prosperous New Year.

Also present at this occasion was Madam Deepthi Bogollagama, Mr. Romesh Jayasinghe, Foreign Secretary, H.E. Mr. Shri Ashok K. Kantha, High Commissioner of India, H.E. Mr Sushil Chandra Amatya, Ambassador, Embassy of Nepal, Mr. Deivanayagam Eassuwaren, Hon. Consul of Maruritius and the staff of the Foreign Ministry. Everyone gathered were served sweet meats at the end of the celebration.
