Northern Province Artiste on a mega cultural show today in Colombo

By Anjana Jayashan in Colombo
Colombo, 20 January, (Asiantribune.com):

The Northern Province of Sri Lanka which inherits a unique Tamil cultural identity with deeply rooted in traditional beliefs and customs, after a lapse of 30 years, holds a mega cultural show today (January 20) at 6.30pm at the BMICH, Colombo 07.

The Northern Provincial council’s plan is to reawaken the cultural identity of the province and to provide space for its expressions through the medium of art with a mega cultural show participating nearly four hundred artistes of different talents, who are coming together for the first time to participate in such an event.

The show is the brainchild of the Northern Province Governor Major General (retired) G.A. Chandrasiri who wanted to emphasize that rebuilding is not only rebuilding of houses and roads but giving opportunities to build their internal lives.

“Giving some recognition to these war stricken people and some kind of improvement of the cultural value of the people were my main concern”, Governor Chandrasiri says.

As the war is over, new opportunities have dawned to develop and re-build Sri Lanka. Reconstruction of infrastructure and rehabilitation of lives and livelihoods go hand-in-hand to achieve the optimum results of rebuilding the nation, which is the most pressing challenge in the post-war scenario with the direct assistance of the Government as well as the private sector.

About 300 artistes comprising cultural gurus, professional artistes and school children will take part in 14 cultural events in the two-and-a-half-hour scintillating performance this evening.

A spokesman for the organizing committee said that they are in an innocent dream of developing a Northern Cultural Fund to have a recording studio for themselves.
