Rajapakse did the “unthinkable”, Fonseka doing the “unbelievable” and a Nation that must do what is Right
The US miscalculated, its envoy Blake miscalculated, the West miscalculated and so did India to result in the “ Unthinkable” – Rajapakse’s astuteness, defiance, strategic realignment and resolve created military history by militarily defeating the darling of the West and its key tool to use Sri Lanka as a foothold to overtly destabilize the region, emerging markets of India as well as China. The anticipated red herring in the form of Fonseka has also backfired.
Why else would western forces be engaged energetically for a regime change if they did not realize their interests were at stake if Rajapakse holds office for a further 6 years?
We shall presume that the West detests the thought of a Rajapakse 2nd tenure as well as deciding against promoting the opposition leader to contest against Rajapakse and so the “unbelievable change” element was transported from the Obama admin by promoting the war hero Fonseka.
The miscalculation for the West again possibly will be a little too late but it predicts a further miscalculation of the public in actually buying into this “change” campaign by introducing to the campaign a bolstered “Opposition Alliance” which may have the support of its members but unlikely to have the support of a country who continues to feel thankful to the incumbent President for ending a war that previous political leaders lacked the courage to do.
The miscalculation has actually come about not so much in desiring a “change” but the “unbelievableness” of those who are in the Opposition Alliance itself. A man who desires revenge for not being kept as Army Commander dissatisfied with the title of CDS head must surely be secretly nursing a grudge against the UNP for transferring him to Colombo, refusing to listen to his advice, ridiculing him and his army, laughing at him and even concluding he was unsuited to run even the salvation army.
Fonseka cannot have forgotten all these insults against him. All this spells and foretells all UNPers that their party is doomed and all UNP political leaders that if they are presently nursing thoughts of returning to power and carrying on what they did during 2002-2004 they better think of alternatives.
Similarly, the man who eliminated the LTTE, who would not have been alive if not for the quick medical treatment provided for by the Government following the suicide attempt on his life must surely not have forgotten the role TNA played in ensuring the LTTE prevailed and lobbied for its cause internationally as well as locally by functioning as its mouthpiece.
Obviously the TNA inclusion into this Alliance is possibly at the behest of the Tamil Diaspora and with the assurance that a resurrection of the LTTE is imminent. The only party that Fonseka has no grudge against is actually the JVP and the links with them are clear and distinct.
It was the JVP who insisted Rajapakse choose Fonseka as the Army Commander in 2005, it was the JVP that backed Fonseka throughout including organizing most of the election campaigns throughout the Island and it is the JVP that now insists the Prime Ministerial candidate in a Fonseka Government is the other Sarath who was once the Chief Justice.
Therefore, even with a Fonseka win, the West has again miscalculated the possibility of a Fonseka actually bringing the JVP element as a neutralizing factor in the pro-west stand that is currently shaping itself to be. It is also surprising how people supporting the Grand Alliance fail to even wonder for how long this alliance honeymoon can last and what is the likely outcome of each party demanding a slice of Fonseka’s “vishwasaneeya wenasak” pie?
Well for western strategists the failure of a Fonseka presidency would suit their interests well – what foreign nation is realistically interested in seeing another country prosper?
Sri Lankans that plays fiddle to such foreign pogroms have to be aware of the ramifications of their own role in compromising the country!
Whatever our presumptions are it is evident that all these secretive ploys and subversive attempts will remain mere plans if the Public is alert and does not become party to the attempts to create mayhem at post-election. Sri Lankans have enough resilience about them and never was there a time that the public actually revolted throughout the massacres on civilians by the LTTE. It must be again reiterated that even the Black July 1983 was an orchestrated attempt by the then UNP Government for which the public cannot be blamed.
We all know how far India helped in allowing the LTTE to prevail. In their limited political scoping they overlooked or neglected to comprehend why the West would provide haven to the LTTE and its offices globally. It was fortunate that they understood the ultimate ploy in nursing the LTTE and thus their discreet assistance to the Sri Lankan Government during the last stages of the war.
In comprehending the bigger picture it is easier to put things in proper perspective. The problem that ails Sri Lankans and in particular those in the urban sectors is that their choice of candidate is often judged upon what they are likely to gain individually by voting a certain party into power. It has been falsely injected that the UNP has the key to building Sri Lanka economically however none of this UNP economic magic prevailed through its sojourn in power – instead the country faced the biggest VAT scam, LTTE was able to freely stock massive arms and ammunition, NGOS/INGOs facilitated the LTTE to build scores of underground bunkers and we had a defense secretary visiting invalid LTTErs in hospitals. The public seem to have short memories.
In deciding to opt for Fonseka as a presidential candidate the western forces presumably are striking at achieving a multitude of objectives not only will they be putting their man (green card holder) but by virtue of the alliance they have created they would steer the country towards shifting its present policy towards a realignment to the West. The only factor would remain the JVP but it is obvious that its leadership now donning western attire have already compromised the party’s “revolutionary” methods though how far the hard core of the JVP will accept this is also questionable but then western strategists would hardly take seriously a JVP support base that is fast dwindling. Then we have single supporters in the Fonseka camp who have shown that manipulation is their second name and possibly their days will be numbered until parliamentary elections when they are likely to be voted out.
It is with well thought out plans and strategies that countries of the West and their governments as well as their diplomatic corps function as they do in Third World countries.
They must realize that in this gambit of conspiracies, manipulations, lies and falsehoods they are able to manipulate weaknesses of Third World nation leaders. As such if ever we wondered why our armed forces failed to eliminate the LTTE in the initial years it is certainly not due to any incompetence’s of the armed forces but purely due to political pressures exerted from foreign climes and India stands accused for allowing the situation to drag so long. If it took 30 years to annihilate the LTTE it has taken a similar time for India to realize that foreign forces that pretended to side with the LTTE was doing so to use the LTTE as a means to break up India & create dissent right round India.
The defeat of another manipulative attempt to submerge Sri Lanka has failed and the Presidents victory is evident and so the next possible scenario remains the possibility of creating a tense situation backed by foreign media and this scenario being predicated should allow the Public not to fall prey as well as for law enforcement officials to be prepared to avert and not create tense environments. It is commendable that a public holiday as being declared giving no room for elements to disturb a country that doesn’t deserve to be dragged into a state of anarchy.
Ideally had Fonseka contested without the elements that call themselves Opposition Alliance he would have stood a better chance – at least no one would have questioned is loyalty, his integrity but the fact that he aligns himself to groups that are diversified who work according to agendas and who function to the dictates of foreign governments it leaves many disillusioned.
Why could not Fonseka have contested as an Independent Candidate if he honestly opposed the manner the present Government was functioning and what is Unbelievable about his campaign is that the reasons given for him to contest against the incumbent President is not the reasons that he appeals for votes today.
Can the public rely on the governance of a man who is continuously changing his parlance not to mention the type of words used? Can we also trust the TNA that declares there’s no secret deal to the Sinhala public but when addressing the Tamils clearly indicate that Fonseka has promised to merge the North and East. The insistence to release 10,000 or so hard-core LTTErs is the key to unleashing terror again and resurrecting the LTTE. Its hopeful that the rehabilitation of these disillusioned men & women will ensure that they never take to guns again and that they are kept away from being manipulated into starting a guerilla movement.
Be that as it may what happens in the next few hours is immensely important. Already word is out that the incumbent President has won….this is followed by rumors of massive vote rigging and all this is to facilitate the next plan to start dissent against the final vote…. The common alliance should open up to the reality that Fonseka cannot win by urban votes alone…the strength of the rural vote is something western forces have failed to factor in spite of years of covert exercises throughout the world.
It is natural that country will see an end to an unbelievable exercise that was purely to oust the incumbent President and one that had nothing to do with the welfare of the country or its people. For a war hero to become part of this covert exercise is very tragic for he could have remained a man whom the country revered as one of the key members to annihilate the LTTE – however, a man’s uncompromising ambitions eventually leads to his own downfall and whatever the outcome it will be a sad day for Sri Lanka. A country that stood proud in May 2009 should not have had to endure more tragedies that will eventually spell the end of political parties, political leaders but thinking positively it is a good time for the people to think how intelligently they can use their power to vote out All parliamentarians who do not deserve to be our leaders – whether they are in the Government or in the Opposition. The people must make bold changes

Shenali, Good ananlysis. You
Shenali,
Good ananlysis. You are trying to reiterate that in politics there are no permanent friends or permanent enimies. Time has come for us to consider a parliament without politicians or political parties. Only last week it was reported that the Afgan Parliament had rejected several of Hamid Karsai's nominees for the Cabinet. That is signs of maturity in the midst of conflict. If Sri Lanka can do it then the elections will ensure election of people who know to do right things right.
A brilliant analysis by
A brilliant analysis by Shrani. I wonder why this could not be done earlier for the intelligent reader. The Western governments have become suckers of LTTE. How on earth they support LTTE who do not have a democratic frame work and none of their leaders are elected. None of these members go for elections and their administration draw similarity with JVP.
With final tally of the votes are coming to light, the next plan of the West will begin. They will try to unseat the winner by bogus propaganda of vote rigging. We saw that in Iran, and that can happen in Sri Lanka too.
Sarath Fonseka did all this without any principles at all. The man, who rightly praised the President and the Defence Secretary just 6 months ago, has become a mouth piece to US Tamil Diaspora. Perhaps he is building better grounds for himself to be a vulgar US citizen. He has no interests to stay in Sri Lanka, and does not care what happens to it. His anger towards the president is well manifested. How about the other who slandered him during the war? This man is a turn coat and should not be trusted by anyone.
The officers of his own Army have so many negative stories to tell about him. Though he was saying that he was promoting clever officers over the other senior carders, he did not do it in proper order. He haphazardly recommended such promotions on a personal basis. He treated his loyalists without proper skills lavishly including some of the women soldiers. There was no approved promotion scheme in the army he ventures on. If not for the skill hand of the Defence Secretary, Army could have become a joke.
While attacking one of his opponents he proudly said that he was the 6th of the Army then, and got the Commander to do some favours to him during that time. That very statement is irregular; if he has helped somebody without ad hearing the procedure of the army he has breached the law. And he being the 6th in the Army did happen during that time not because of his skills, but seniority where so many other officers above him had died in the war.
