Unofficial results reveal Mahinda wins the Presidency by more than 60% votes
The unofficial reports reveal that Mahinda Rajapaksa has won the Presidential election convincingly with more than 60 % of vote.
The latest reports revealed that out of the 22 districts in the Island, Mahinda Rajapaksa won in 20 districts and the opposition candidate Sarath Fonseka won in the districts of Batticaloa and Jaffna.
In the last Presidential election held on November 2005 Mahinda Rajapaksa won in 11 districts and Rani Wickremasinghe the UNP candidate also won in 11 districts, but Mahinda won the Presidency by a wafer thin majority.
But the story this year is just the opposite. Mahinda is winning by overwhelming majority and by more than 60% of the vote.

The people's verdict
Finally the people have spoken aloud. The issue considered by the majority was not corruption or violation of constitution but who is the best to lead the country united after a 30-year war. It is also an eye opener for the west, which has been asking for a pound of flesh since May 2009. Whatever the differences in opinion, the readers of AT are sure to continue to opine objectively on the manifesto of President MR as Sri Lankans who always hope for a better future.
A lot of things were expressed in AT and most with hatred. Continuous expression of the toxic emotion of hatred will change a person with such emotions to a wicked person without being aware of. Sri Lankans are not wicked persons and nor they are known to be nurturing hatred. Time has come to refrain from criticising people in the North and East for not voting for MR. They must be having their own reasons for not doing so. Before they groom their next generation with same divisive thoughts, the South who has always held the power at the top to decide for the country should focus on a national physical plan that would provide equal access to opportunities for prosperity. Hope AT would now invite the readers of AT to discuss the future not with hatred but with optimism.
I thank all writers to AT who wrote on issues (not events) and AT readers who commented on issues presented in AT objectively and without hatred because such issues and comments were educative.
Our heartiest congratulations
Our heartiest congratulations to President Mahinda Rajapakse ! A victory won at a difficult time against a strange opponent of 'many hues', is a victory indeed. The time has come for Tamil leaders especially to look at their neglected constituents and look to their needs, and work with common sense and goodwill for the common good of the country that feeds & nurtures them. It is time for the Tamil leaders to think 'Sri Lankan', not just 'Tamil'. The same goes for some Muslim leaders.
As for the ltte rump - cultivate honesty & decency, and you all will get closer to real happiness.

Listen to this mad man Fonseka.
He is a twisted liar spreading different tales. He keeps coming out with different crap. His own arrogance and ineptitude to register to vote is being twisted by him as a tool against the Government/MR.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bY6foimxHs0
Also outlines his plans for his Military Coup and then says he wants the West to bomb Sri Lanka like Iraq. THIS MAN IS MAD.
He wants REVENAGE on Sinhala people for not voting him into power.
Exposing the Rascals
Thank you Sri Lankan electorate for giving a clear mandate to the President to govern Sri Lanka for another term. MR now can govern the country with confidence to direct it to proper goals and making the gains of May 18 permanent. It is pity that the Tamil mind set has not changed though they are complaining about everybody else. The voter turnout in North and East tells us another storey when you analyse about the silent majority who did not vote at all in the North and East. The process of making agreements with LTTE elements by SF did keep them away. Most of the innocent Tamils of North and East are still scared of their own life as the government cannot give adequate protection to them if they acted against this well organized and well funded group LTTE. The Diaspora is still very active, and they have the money still to kill at will. I wish MR can eliminate this threat once and for all, and give the average Tamil citizen the confidence to participate in real democracy. MR should work for it by not accommodating LTTE elements in his new administration. Tamils also should understand the resentment they cultivated in the majority Sinhalese by the violence LTTE leashed on average Sri Lankan citizen. The killer machine is responsible for over 80,000 deaths in Sri Lanka.
Then we have another side to the storey. The very comfortable urban population. Most of them have no values as such. They only need good life at the expense of the rural masses. People in Colombo and Kandy thinks that they are the whole of Sri Lanka. Unleashing bogus propaganda of corruption and other slogans they were trying to win the votes. SF never had a vision to govern Sri Lanka except vicious speeches against the president. Ranil, Mano, Ravi, Mangala, Jayalath, Tissa along with JVP did most of the damage to the country by dividing the people. SF and the co for hiding the fact that he is not a voter himself are legendary of his intentions. But we managed to expose most of them this time at the election. If UNP fielded their own candidate perhaps they would have done better.
Mr President, you cannot please some of these parasites and rascals. You may focus on the good people who elected you to build a better country. You also should build a good media apparatus to beam the truth to the masses, as election rules does apply only to state broadcasters, but the private media can go to town by helping undesirable elements even by broadcasting false propaganda claiming they are independent. Even they tried to portray Sarath Fonseka as apolitical when he does not have minimum qualifications to run for the highest office in the country unless supported by a recognized political party. Some time one wonders whether Election Commissioner himself was biased towards SF. A person, who has not cast his vote for several past elections, whether has a right to capture power by back door. Now it is the Supreme Court to decide and bring clarity to election rules and government to make necessary amendments to make such process more representative of the Sri Lankan electorate.
