Fonseka may flee country, says President

President Mahinda Rajapakse on Wednesday expressed the fear that his main challenger and opposition candidate Sarath Fonseka may flee the country as he is a US green card holder.

Talking to foreign electronic media after getting a second term as excutive President, Mr Rajapaksa said in reply to a question that Gen Fonseka "is a Green Card holder and he may flee to the US".

Asked about when he proposed to hold elections to the northern provincial council, the Presidentt said: " I am a politician and I will hold elections at the most opportune. I cannot give you a date."

Asked if he was worried why Tamils in the north had not voted for him he said "I expected the results in the north. I just wanted them to join the process and I am happy they were part of the electoral process"

And asked if he feared that the Tamils do not trust him he said "That's not true. I don't think so"

And asked about the perception that his government has a growing distance with washington, the President denied any such "rift" and said he was not "mad to have problems with everyone in the world".
