Government waits for the Opposition’s Green Light for a Constitutional Change
United Peoples Freedom Alliance government is prepared to go for a constitutional amendment as it promised to the general public just before the presidential elections, said by Media Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena.
Minister said “government seeks the opposition’s assistance in the process and we believe in that they would help in the endeavor as they were also planning for a constitutional change.”
He also requested the opposition to express their willingness and assistance over the proceedings on the proposal within the next week.
Addressing the media personnel in his ministry premises, Colombo, Minister Abeywardena said if the opposition does not agree, the government is in a move to dissolve the Parliament before its due date and to seek a two thirds majority for a constitutional revision at a fresh election.
Anyway, the term of this Parliament is due to end on 22 April 2010.
Minister Abeywardena further added that they had no any doubt on getting the two thirds majority in the Parliament at a new election as people have already shown they are with the United Peoples Freedom Alliance Government and its Leader President Mahinda Rajapaksha.
“No wonder, we will be able to exceed the number of votes which we got at the Presidential elections. Now, our effort is winning the support of the 40 percent of voters who voted for the Opposition”.
He also added that the final result of the Presidential election has itself changed the half of that 40% voters and special campaign will be made to reach others too. Minister Abeywardena also extended its gratitude to all those who contributed to the victory of the President Rajapaksha and defeat of the international conspiracies.
“People are intelligent enough to see the reality and they had rejected the false accusations and fabricated propaganda carried against the government at the election campaign”, the Media Minister added.
