Has Sri Lanka been made a chopping board by Western countries?

K T Rajasingham
Colombo, 02 February (Asiantribune.com):

In the guise of congratulating the victory of President Mahinda Rajapaksa in the Presidential election, the Western countries have made it a habit to sermonize what Sri Lanka should do and what it should not.

The latest sermon comes from Erik Solheim, Norway’s Minister of Environment and International Development.

In his congratulatory message he began to shed crocodile tears by pointing out “We note that the election itself was relatively peaceful. However, we are concerned by reports of unrest and violent incidents during the lead-up to the election, as well as of possible violations of the election law. “

It was the first time in Sri Lanka election was held relatively in peaceful environment without attacks and suicides attacks that used to be unleashed by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, a reckless terrorists organization that was supported by Erik Solheim and initially by many Western countries.

Similar preaching was undertaken in the congratulatory message by the High Representative/ Vice President Baroness Catherine Ashton's of the European Union.

In her statement on Sri Lanka's Presidential election she reproved that “The EU reiterates its concern that a significant number of incidents occurred during the election campaign. It trusts that the irregularities reported by election observers and the election commission will be duly investigated and that the safety and security of all candidates and campaign workers will be ensured by the authorities.”

Initially it was the US Government that started the preaching game in its congratulatory message. America said, “We also note, however, some reports of possible violations of election law during the campaign, voting, and counting, and we urge a thorough investigation of these allegations in accordance with Sri Lankan law and in keeping with the democratic traditions of the country. In addition, we urge the authorities to ensure the safety and security of all candidates and campaign workers.”

However when compared with earlier times, the violence was relatively low and Westerners know well that election was held just six months after ending the LTTE menace in the country and they wanted to find faults as they were disappointed over the overwhelming victory of President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

In the light of the earlier quantum of violence unleashed during the previous Presidential elections, this time it was not that alarming.

The Western countries that indirectly funded the Opposition candidate in the presidential election have to be held responsible for whatever violence that was unleashed during the Presidential election campaign.

During the election campaign Opposition candidates’ supporters were working to a plan to unleash violence and create an Iran-like situation in the country to bring the country under the Western control.

However, Sri Lanka Government was able to control the miscreants by alerting the armed forces and managed to nip it in the bud without violence spreading to an uncontrollable proportion.

After the election, it is beginning to emerge that there was a well planned conspiracy to topple the Government.

At present government is in the process of weeding out all those involved in the conspiracy against the Government.
